Staghorn ferns are relatively easy to care for once you understand their basic needs.
Here’s a quick guide to keep your staghorn fern healthy:
Light:
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
It can tolerate lower light, but growth will slow down.
Watering:
Water thoroughly when the sphagnum moss feels dry.
Humidity is important—aim for 50-70%. If the air is too dry, mist the plant or place it on a humidity tray.
Temperature:
Warm temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (16°C–27°C) are ideal. Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Feeding:
Fertilize monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.
Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
Mounting:
Many staghorn ferns are mounted on wood or other materials. If yours is mounted, ensure it’s not too dry and is getting enough moisture.
Pruning:
Remove dead fronds and any old growth that may look yellow or brown.
The fronds grow in two types: the basal (shield-like) fronds that protect the root system, and the hanging, antler-like fronds that grow out. Be careful when trimming to not damage the delicate fronds.
By following these care tips, you can keep your staghorn fern healthy and vibrant.
