3-4” Potted Lifesaver Cactus

Actual plant / pot may vary from picture!

Huernia zebrina, commonly known as the Zebra Cactus or Starfish Cactus, is a unique and low-maintenance succulent that originates from southern Africa. Its striking star-shaped flowers and spiny stems make it a standout plant.

Here’s how to care for it:

Light:

Bright, indirect light is best, although it can tolerate some direct sunlight. Too much direct sun, especially in hot climates, can scorch its leaves.

Avoid low light, as this can cause leggy growth and poor flowering.

Watering:

Like most succulents, Huernia zebrina is drought-tolerant. Water thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

During the growing season (spring and summer), water once every 1-2 weeks, depending on the humidity and temperature.

In winter, reduce watering, as the plant is semi-dormant during the colder months.

Soil:

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. It can also be made by mixing regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Ensure the pot has good drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom, which can lead to rot.

Temperature:

Warm temperatures are ideal. The plant prefers temperatures between 70°F and 90°F (21°C to 32°C) during the growing season.

It is not frost-tolerant, so protect it from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Bring it indoors during the winter months if you live in a cold climate.

Humidity:

Huernia zebrina prefers low to moderate humidity. It’s well-suited for dry indoor environments.

Avoid overly humid conditions, as they can encourage rot or fungal diseases.

Fertilizing:

Feed it during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer or a fertilizer designed for succulents. Fertilize once a month or every 6 weeks.

In winter, avoid fertilizing as the plant is dormant and doesn’t need extra nutrients.

Repotting:

Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Choose a pot that’s just slightly larger than the current one.

Be careful when handling the plant, as the stems can be fragile.

Flowers:

Huernia zebrina is known for its foul-smelling, star-shaped flowers, which attract pollinators like flies. The smell is similar to rotting meat, which is typical for certain types of succulents.

It’s a good idea to place the plant near an open window if the smell bothers you.

Pests:

Keep an eye on common succulent pests like mealybugs, aphids, or scale insects.

If you spot pests, treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

By following these care tips, your Huernia zebrina should thrive and provide unique, attractive flowers while being a relatively low-maintenance addition to your home or garden.
